As a current educator and graduate student in both the LTDE and school counseling programs, I wanted my vision and mission statements to convey all aspects of who I am and who I want to be as a professional. Having this in mind, I started doing research and brainstorming about what I would like and could contribute. Our recent data has revealed tremendous inequity and achievement gaps that ultimately translate to lack of opportunities for our students. On the other hand, many students feel little to no connection to the material and wonder whether they will ever need it outside of the classroom, thus causing them to “check out.” To some it is difficult to focus as they feel their story is already written. SEL has the ability to connect students with the learning environment and the content we as teachers are so passionate about. Through the revision of our curriculum, incorporation of 21st century tools and implementation of SEL strategies, we have the incredible opportunity to allow our students to immerse themselves in learning, see themselves reflected not only where they are but where they can be in the future, and break the barriers of a stigmatized society.
